Intro

Thanks to Sarah Jane, who has put together these guidance notes for facillitators and workshop leaders. Please ask if you've got any questions - there will be a Session Facillitator for each session, who will float about and be there to answer any questions.

Some Notes for Facilitators

Make sure leader knows re: lots of input and what feedback they have to give on sheets and what will happen with that (for them to let group know). The attached guidance sheet can help with this.
The feedback on sheets should be: most contentious issue; biggest area of agreement; What Another Sheffield is Possible for this group is (one point for each if poss).

Make sure that the workshop leader knows who the session facilitator is and that they will be around to answer any questions, bring people in late to groups etc.

Discuss with your workshop leader what they will be doing around getting the group to introduce themselves to each other (possible label moment if approp?) and the “groundrules” they’ll be setting for the discussions – if any - e.g. everyone to switch off mobiles; everyone to respect each other’s opinions/use the groundrules; everyone to make sure everyone is/feels included (individuals in group to suggest “groundrules” if there are any?)

Be looking for the dynamics in the group so that you can help out anyone who doesn’t seem to be having a say or if anyone is being dominating

At the beginning of the session share that on the walls there are spaces to: ask questions…and provide answers if they come up

  • share what “Another Sheffield” might look like
  • have a moan
  • express/get creative
  • share resources
  • share information about events

this is a useful way of moving on if discussion is stuck e.g. – so this is a question that we can’t answer here – let’s put it up for everyone and come back to it later – there is a form below to capture that info from contributors in the group – or it would be great if individuals write up their own

Time-keep – give the leader a quiet word half way through the session. Your workshop co-ordinator should come round to remind the groups about time-keeping, but you should keep an eye on it too

Some Notes for Workshop Leaders

(NB This text comes from a sheet that will be handed out on the day, with appropriate information filled out.)

First of all – thank you and welcome – we hope that you’ll be able to share lots and create lots of discussion and feedback today.

There will be a Session Facilitator who is your contact for today. Their job is to answer any questions and to sort out any issues (including bringing late people into groups) for all the workshop leaders in each workshop session. Your Session Facilitator is: ____

You will also have a Workshop Facilitator in your group. Their job is to help you facilitate discussions and make sure that the group can resolve or “park” anything that is preventing discussion. There are feedback places/spaces to:

  • ask questions…and provide answers if they come up
  • share what “Another Sheffield” might look like
  • have a moan
  • express/get creative
  • share resources
  • share information about events

Your facilitator has a form to get this input from your group (alternatively it would be great if people wanted to write it down themselves and then write it up). Your Workshop Facilitator is: ____
